Planting the same crop in the same spot year after year drains the soil of specific nutrients and gives pests a permanent home. Crop rotation solves both problems.

A simple four-year rotation

  1. Year 1: Leafy greens — lettuce, spinach, kale
  2. Year 2: Fruiting crops — tomatoes, peppers, squash
  3. Year 3: Root vegetables — carrots, beets, radishes
  4. Year 4: Legumes — beans, peas, clover

Then start again.

Why it works

  • Different crops use different nutrients.
  • Legumes return nitrogen to the soil.
  • Moving crops disrupts pest and disease life cycles.

Track rotation in VleraGarden

Use the Crop Rotation view to see what grew in each zone across seasons. When you remove a planting, VleraGarden records it in the zone's history so you can plan the next cycle with confidence.

Healthy soil is the foundation of every great harvest.
